 Notes for THOMAS STEPHENS:
West Virginia became a state in 1863, during the Civil War. The Western part of Virginia,in general, did not agree with
holding slaves. However, Wood County was very much a
"border area" in this regard, and there were some slave holding families. The area around Washington Bottom
(a rich bottom-land and farming area next to the Ohio River)
was especially known for its confederate sympathies, and maintained a Confederate Citizens Organization until the end
of the war. Many families throughout the County were
split, sending some sons to fight for the North and other sons to fight for the Confederate Army in the South.

 Notes for WILLIAM STEPHENS,SR.:
 History of Virginia/West Virginia:

From the original Shire came Charles City, formed in 1634. In 1703 Prince George was created from Charles City. Then in
1732 came Brunswick from Prince George. Augusta was formed from Brunswick in 1746. In 1776 Monongalia came from Augusta. Harrison
was formed in 1784 from Monongalia. Wood was created in 1798 from Harrison. Hampshire County was created around 1754 from
lands held by Augusta and Frederick Counties. From Mason and Kanawha and Wood counties was Jackson County in 1831. Wirt County
was formed from Wood and Jackson in 1848.

8/17/08 - On this date I received an email message from Wayne Lee. He believes that his John C. Stephens is the brother
of William and if correct then all descendents after William Sr. are connected. Keep in mind this connection has not been
proven yet but the names have been added: Thomas, John, Evan.

HERMAN NOLAN STEPHENS born 31 January 1897 in Le Roy, West Virginia, and died 02 April 1964 in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
He married PHILOMILLA ADALINE MABRY 01 September 1923 in Medina Co. Ohio, daughter of FREDERIC MABRY and LILLIAN HEWES. She
was born 30 May 1904 in Lafayette, Madison Co., OH, and died 30 August 1998 in Dover, Ohio.

 Notes for HERMAN NOLAN STEPHENS:
Herman was a tobacco chewing traveling salesman in the 1950's and early 1960's. Prior to that he had worked as a coal
miner and was injured in a cave-in. This may have
occurred at the Wolf's Run mine in Amsterdam, Ohio in the late 20's. Though his leg had been broken he managed to pull
himself and others to safety. He was labeled a hero as a result of his actions and walked with a limp the remanded of his
life. Before his mining days he had a job as a cook on a Chuck wagon.

He first married a gal from the Chicago area who was only 15 years old. The new Mrs. Stephens refused to stay at home
and perform the functions of a wife so their marriage
lasted only six months. Sometime later Herman met Adaline Mabry and after three weeks of dating they married.
It's common knowledge that the Mabry boys disapproved of Herman and didn't want their sister dating or marrying him.
Two stories have surfaced regarding this matter. The first comes from the Mabry camp which indicates that Jack and Ed
learned that Mila (Adaline) had been dating Herman and
was planning on marrying him so they took Mila out to dinner at some fancy restaurant with the intent of talking her out
of the marriage. Ed, who liked to get right to the point, stated, "What the hell is this we hear you are dating a worthless
hillbilly", at which point Mila got up from the table and left marring Herman within 24 hours of the meeting with her
brothers. She was forever excluded from all family matters but the boys financially help her out over the years.

The second story comes from the Stephens side and simply states that Ed requested Mila leave Herman after their first
child, Richard, was born because Herman drank and
smoked. The tragedy in all this is that the Stephens and Mabry families never got to know each other, even to this day.

 Notes for Jeannette Lillian Stephens:
Adeline went to a neighbor and requested a Doctor be summoned as she was in labor. The neighbor telephoned a Doctor ,
who asked if Adeline was in "Hard Labor". The neighbor indicated "No" so the Doctor took his time getting
to the house. In fact, the Doctor went rabbit hunting on his way out to the house. By the time he arrived Jeannette had already
been delivered. Not only did the good Doctor fail to make the birth, he, according to Jeanette, provided the Department of
Health with the wrong name. The doctor gave the Health Department the name - Janet Lillian Stevens and listed her fathers
name as Herman N. Stevens (note the spelling of his last name). So her birth certificate indicated one name and Jeannette
has gone by another name all her life. In 1932 Jeannette became the 54th reported case of Polio in Tuscarawas Co. Ohio, only
                                    the 10th in New Philadelphia.

 Notes for ORVAN OLAND STEVENS:
Orvan seems to be one of the more interesting members of the family. Many relatives believed his name was Orval and even
had a nephew named after him. It turns out that
was not the case but stories persist about what his real name was. Documents show Orval, Orrin and Orvan.
At the tender age of 14 years Orvan ran off and joined the Army. By age 16 or 17 he was asking his father for help in
getting out of the Army because of the start of WWI. His
father refused to assist him and he eventually was sent to France with some of the very first troops. He fought in many
of the major battles including the Battle of Argonne Forest. Once he returned Stateside, Orvan faked being unable to speak
and after weeks of testing by the Army he was medically discharged. He literally walked out of the Army and across the street
and into the Navy. As he did this he turned to the Army boys waved and said "good bye". It's been said Orvan didn't
care much for the Army but he loved the Navy. It is believed it is at this point that Orvan changed the family name from Stephens
to Stevens, but this remains an item of debate. Shortly after leaving the Navy Orvan was hired on as a motorcycle police officer
for the city of Akron. Though no records exist showing when he was hired it appears he was with the Police Department about
three years. On November 4, 1936 Orvan resigned his
 commission with the P.D.
