At the age of 17, Thomas Karr went to Guernsey County where he served an apprenticeship to the carriage maker's trade. After six years spent in this work, he returned to Coshocton County to engage in farming.
Early in his life, Thomas Karr united with the Presbyterian Church, but there being no church of that denomination near where he lived in Defiance County, he joined in the organization of the Methodist Episcopal Church in his neighborhood. He gave the land for the church, known as the Auglaize Chapel, and he and his family became charter members. He and his wife continued being active members of the Methodist Church after they moved to Defiance.

In 1862, Thomas Karr enlisted in Coshocton County militia, and in 1864 he enlisted in the regular army for 100 days, serving four months in Co. H., 143rd Regiment O.V.I.
In 1880, the family moved to Defiance County, Ohio, and located in Defiance Township about four miles south of the city of Defiance, where they engaged in farming. In April of 1895, the family moved to the city of Defiance where they resided the remaining years of their lives. Both are interred in Defiance, Ohio.
